The information below are the minimum requirements for a grading so all ways be well prepared to do more.
All Participants start with a white belt and the gradings are as follows:
 

Coloured Belts

Mons (under 10 yrs) & Yonen (10 - 12yrs)Coloured Belt Requirements for Mon and Yonen  Yellow: Orange: Green: Blue: Brown are the same except Yonen are required to be more proficient in  performing their skills

Yellow Belt

Yellow Belt :JFA Requirement 2 Nage Waza from 1st kyo, 1 Osae Komie Waza. No minimum time. This grade is awarded to those who have gained competence in Ukemi (falling) and an introduction in judo techniques, training methods, terminology and history.

Orange Belt

Orange Belt: JFA Requirement 4 Nage Waza from 1st kyo, 2 Osae Komie Waza. This grade is awarded to those who have gained increased knowledge of technique and the ability to perform some techniques with speed and style.

Green Belt

Green Belt: JFA Requirement 6 Nage Waza  from 1st and 2nd kyo, 3 Osae Komie Waza Minimum time: 3 months. This grade should demonstrate most of the required techniques with speed and style and be competent in randori (free style practice). Shiai (Contest): 30 points.

Blue Belt

Blue Belt Throws: JFA Requirement 8 Nage Waza  from 1st and 2nd kyo, 4 Osae Komie Waza. Effective Randori must be shown against 3 opponents of similar experience during the process of the examination. Minimum time: 6 months. Good ability at applying and combining techniques in randori and shiai (contest). Shiai (Contest): 30 points. Mons Minimum age 8 yrs, Yonen minimum age 11yrs.

Brown Belt

Throws: JFA Requirement 16 Nage Waza from 1st, 2nd and 3rd kyo, 5 Osae Komie Waza.  Effective Randori must be shown against 5 opponents of similar experience during the process of the examination.  Minimum time: 12 months. Very sound knowledge and ability must be shown for all techniques. Shiai (Contest): 60 points.  Mons Minimum age 9 yrs, Yonen minimum age 12 yrs.

Coloured Belts

Shonen (13-16 yrs) & Seinen (over 16yrs)  Coloured Belt Requirements for Seinen and Shonen  Yellow: Orange: Green: Blue: Brown Juniors will not have to do arm locks , strangles and Kata till there Blue belt grading :

Yellow Belt

Yellow Belt :JFA Requirement 8 Nage Waza from 1st kyo, 4 Osae Komie Waza, 2 Kansetsu-waza, 2 Shime-waza, 2 turn over's and 2 passing legs,  No minimum time. This grade is awarded to those who have gained competence in Ukemi (falling) and an introduction in judo techniques, training methods, terminology and history.

Orange Belt

Orange Belt: JFA Requirement 8 Nage Waza from 1st and 2nd kyo, 4 Osae Komie Waza, 2 Kansetsu-waza, 2 Shime-waza, 2 turn over's and 2 passing legs. Judoka must demonstrate escapes to at least 2 Osae Komie Waza techniques  This grade is awarded to those who have gained increased knowledge of technique and the ability to perform some techniques with speed and style.

Green Belt

Green Belt: JFA Requirement 16 Nage Waza  from 1st, 2nd, 3rd kyo, 6 Osae Komie Waza, 4 Kansetsu-waza, 4 Shime-waza, 4 turn over's, 4 passing legs. Judoka must demonstrate escapes to at least 4 Osae Komie Waza techniques. Judoka must show 2 methods of neutralising Shime Waza and Kansetsu Waza  Minimum time: 3 months. This grade should demonstrate most of the required techniques with speed and style and be competent in randori (free style practice). Shiai (Contest): 30 points.

Blue Belt

Blue Belt Throws: JFA Requirement 24 Nage Waza from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th kyo, 6 Osae Komie Waza, 6 Kansetsu-waza,5 Shime-waza, 5 turn over's, 4 passing legs, 4 Kaeshi-waza, 4 Renraku-waza. Judoka must demonstrate escapes to at least 5 Osae Komie Waza techniques. Judoka must show 2 methods of neutralising Shime Waza and Kansetsu Waza  Minimum time: 6 months. Good ability at applying and combining techniques in randori and shiai (contest). Shiai (Contest): 30 points. Shonen minimum age 14 yrs.

Brown Belt

Throws: JFA Requirement  32 Nage Waza from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th kyo, 6  Osae Komie Waza,  6 Kansetsu-waza, 6 Shime-waza, 4 turn over's, 4 passing legs, 6 Kaeshi-waza, 6 Renraku-waza and 1st, 2nd and 3rd sets nage-no-kata (Tori).  Minimum time: 12 months. Very sound knowledge and ability must be shown for all techniques. Shiai (Contest): 60 points. Shonen minimum age 15 yrs.
